5 Ways to Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions

Ringing in the New Year is exciting and a great way to reflect on the memories we have made these last past twelve months.  And as the new year approaches we often think of ways to make sure this new year will be able to top the previous year thanks to our many resolutions.  Although they are easy to make- it is the follow through that makes us cringe a bit.  Here are some easy tips and trick to turn your resolutions into reality!

1. Donate : Yes, you may have went through everything in your closet prior to the holidays and dropped off a generous sized bag of unwanted items to your local Goodwill or charity of choice, but now is a time to go through your own items and pair down even further.  Often times we have that old shirt that we swear we love, but will never wear or those slightly worn out shoes that you bought for a fancy occasion and never touched again.  Be strong and realize you do not really need all these material possessions to be happy and having less clutter in your house will further de-stress you.  Going from there have a rule for yourself if you plan on going out and purchasing new items.  For instance, if you buy something, you have to get rid of something (of equal size).  This rule will help you evaluate whether or not your purchase is worth it and if you really need it.

2. Stop eating out (so frequently):    Grabbing a burger or some greasy take out may seem like a delicious option in the movement, but if your New Year’s resolution was to eat healthier and tone up your body, putting all those unhealthy ingredients in your body just is not going to cut it.  Also, but cooking at home you will not only save money, but know what goes into your food.  Here is an awesome article that goes over some healthier food swaps for making your own meals!

3. Leave your electronics at home: We all say we are going to exercise more, be healthier and fit, but how can we achieve a proper work out when we are often bombarded with text messages, emails, and other social media notifications on our smart devices.  In order to get that exercise in, taking a quick walk outside or exploring a hiking trail near you are great ways to get in some exercise.  But bringing your electronics can make it tempting to check your phone or pop in those ear buds and blast your favorite music on repeat.  Perhaps if you are walking with a friend try leaving your cell phone at home or do not take your headphones with you while running and instead try to get lost in nature and be present in the movement.  Or if you do have to take your phone (for security reasons), leave it alone in your pocket/backpack/purse and drink up nature, talk to your dog or wave to the adorable squirrels chasing each other up a tree.

4. Save your change: Saving money to travel the world is a ambitious goal that may be hard to achieve but here is an easy way to rack up some savings without even realizing it.  Pay cash for a lot of items, keep your change and save it in a special container or jar, those pennies, nickels and dimes sure add up pretty quickly.  Another great way to save up is to look into apps that are created to help you manage and save your money for free.  Here are the top 8 Automatic Savings Apps of 2017 these apps can help you create goals and assist in helping you save up towards that trip you have been dreaming about for ages!

5. Invest in a good mattress and pillow:  Sleep is a very important part of our day, the more well rested you are, the more productive and happier your will be.  Making sure you have a comfortable mattress and pillows are essential for a good nights rest.  Although mattress and pillows can be quite costly, looking for end-of-the-year sales and blow outs can soften the initial costs.  Other thinks that might be affecting your sleep could include your behavior before bedtime.  These are some healthy sleep tips that can make your nights a lot more comfortable and well-rested.

  1. Back in December 1965, I was writing down New Year’s Resolutions when my wise old grandmother caught me. She was a little upset. In her own words, “If it’s good enough to start doing in January, it’s good enough to start doing today!” Thus, I have never had to make new years’ resolutions to keep my life going the way I want it to go.

    1. Great insight! I understand where you are coming from and I agree with the sentiment. But sometimes New Years gives people that little extra “push” when we are feeling lazy and uninspired. But either way, definitely live life the way you want to and resolutions can be made all year round!
