A tiny house is defined as a house that is under 500 square feet. It can be mobile (built on a trailer bed with wheels) or have a solid foundation, just like a typical home. The average American house is around 2,500 square feet. The average tiny house ranges between 100 to 400 square feet. Although these tiny houses may not have a lot of space, the idea of less space is appealing for people who want to promote simple living and want to focus their attention more on experiences rather than material belongings.
The tiny house movement is a growing trend which allow people financial freedom – due to the affordability of the unit and lowered living cost. A lot of states are beginning to recognize the tiny house movement, due to the rapid increase in tiny house communities that are being created in response to the movement. These states include California, Oregon, Texas, Washington D.C. and more. One issue that has cropped up is the placement of these tiny houses. Zoning laws have not caught up with these trends and the tiny house community have been working towards changing these laws in order to be more inclusive and more tiny house friendly. This is an exciting movement that has picked up great momentum which has great potential for future home owners.
